We all know that studying for any sort of test can be a stressor. Here is a great article about stress management. The article offers up great stress relieving activities.

**One way to relieve stress is exercise! Jefferson at Berry has a great work out room… so if you are feeling stressed, utilize our work out room!

** Good luck on your midterms!!

For 50 years St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital has...

For 50 years St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital has been finding cures and saving children all across the 50 states and from all around the world. St. Jude’s mission is to find cures for children with cancer and other diseases. To help give back, Jefferson at Berry hosted a Garage Sale and Bike Auction where all of the proceeds went to St. Jude. As a team we raised over $800. Without the help of our fabulous residents, we wouldn’t have been able to do this! So a big huge THANK YOU to everyone that supported our event.

J@B will be hosting a few more events this year to help raise money for St. Jude! So be sure to stay tuned to hear about upcoming events and fund raisers!

Getting Your SuperFoods on a Budget

By Geoffrey R. Harris, MD

Eating healthy does not need to be expensive. Take a look at these ways to live a SuperFoods HealthStyle without spending too much of your hard-earned money.

With food prices on the rise, I have been hearing grumblings from my patients about the cost of eating a healthy diet. I thought I would gather up some of the ideas that my wife and I use to get lots of SuperFoods in our diet without breaking the bank.

The first, and most important thing, you can do to cut costs at the grocery is prepare yourself for your trip. Start by taking some time to plan meals for the week and prepare a list. Keep to the list at the store. Also, my wife and I always try to eat before we go to the market because when we are hungry, it is harder to resist buying things that aren’t on the list. By having a plan and a list, you will help prevent impulse buying. Try shopping with your spouse or a friend if you find yourself prone to buying things that aren’t on your list. Furthermore, look through the flyers that come from each of your local groceries and compare prices. Use coupons whenever possible.

Here are some more tips that will help you eat healthy and stay on budget:

Choose produce that is in season. Fruits and vegetables that are in season will be more reasonably priced and will typically last longer.

Buy apples, onions, potatoes, and oranges in large bags, instead of from the single or per-pound bin.

Look on the internet for local farmers markets or produce markets. My wife and I buy most of our produce from a market about 35 minutes away that has great prices on produce that isn’t perfect enough to be in the local groceries. If you don’t mind fruits and vegetables that aren’t gorgeous, then a place like this is great. Many restaurants get their produce from markets like this. Since I don’t display or photograph my fruits and vegetables, I really don’t care if it is perfect. This market just had blood oranges, orange peppers, and Mineola tangerines for 49 cents a pound—you can’t beat that!

If one of your favorite fruits or vegetables is on sale, then buy extra and freeze some for later.

Buy generic when possible. Be sure to compare the labels, but typically the name brand and generic have the same nutritional value.

Stop drinking soda and bottled water. These are expensive items that can really add up.

Get yourself a reusable stainless steel water bottle (like a Klean Kanteen) and fill your own water bottle with filtered water from home and take it to work or the gym.

Get to know your grocery’s frozen food aisle. You can buy frozen berries, fruits, vegetables, and meat. Be sure to look at the ingredient labels to be ensure that there isn’t any added sugar or salt.

Avoid processed food. Whether it is frozen or bagged or boxed, processed foods will be more expensive than if you made the meal from scratch. These processed foods are also not as healthy and nutritious as a meal you made from SuperFoods. Processed foods tend to add lots of sodium, extra fat, and preservatives.

Look for sales on meats and cheese. Poultry can be skinned, divided, and frozen for later use. Cheese can be frozen and thawed as you need it.

Limit the amount of junk food, candy, chips, and cookies that you buy. These foods tend to be expensive and have very little nutritional value.

Always look high and low in an aisle. Typically the highest priced items are at eye level and the cheaper alternatives end up down at the bottom or at the top of a shelf.

Canned fruits and vegetables are okay if you look for low sodium options and the produce should be packed in water or juice, not oil or heavy syrup.

Canned tuna or salmon is a great way to include fish in your diet and it is very reasonably priced. Choose fish that is canned in water, not oil.

Buy cereals and whole grains in bulk, without fancy packaging, and put it in airtight containers when you get home.

Buy block cheese and shred it yourself.

Finally, get creative. I will often make a filling SuperFoods chili by combining a can of chicken, some frozen spinach, canned tomatoes, corn, frozen green peppers, tomato paste, black beans, and lots of whatever spices I’m in the mood for. Usually this low-cost, tasty, and easy recipe lasts at least two or three meals. One last thing my wife and I have started doing is making extra dinner so that we have leftovers which are great for lunch the next day. Going out to eat for lunch everyday can be expensive and often unhealthy, while bringing your own lunch is a healthier, typically lower-calorie option. Once you start thinking in this mindset, you’ll likely find even more ways to get the most bang out of your grocery buck.

The article talks about the
relevance of the holiday after 42 years of celebration. First of all,
no I do not believe it should be abolished, and thats not what I
believe what West was trying to get at. Earth Day is a day to make
aware of Global issues of our environment, and yes there is issues. To
all those people who just want to not have to think about the damage
they are causing, these problems are not going to just go away, and
your children or children’s children will be the ones suffering for
your ignorance. Earth does have limited resources, and thats just
common sense! These issues are real, and if you want proof, please
read The Limits to Growth, and confirmation by MIT’s Graham Turner,
which was published just weeks ago. If your still not convinced look
at the price of gas, and think back to what those prices were 5, 10,
15 or 20 years ago, when you are filling up your gas-guzzling
impractical SUV. The oil producers are not stupid, and realize they
only have a limited quantity remaining of their product, and they
better make the money on it while they still can. I want the Earth to
be a better place for myself and future generations, and it is not
fair for us to irresponsibly consume all of its natural resources. It
is our responsibility to make a conscious effort to correct the
problems we are encountering as best we can. This call to action is
for both the microscale and macroscale. Collectivley, people making an
effort to recycle, car pool, bike instead of drive, plant a tree, or
even just walk, is a great way to start. As well on the macroscale,
i.e. government, and not just America but all countries, issues need
to be addressed, and their is a need to enact and enforce standards to
prolong the life of this planet. To all the idiots who posted their
opinions on the West article, who say they are just going to
completley disregard eco-friendly practices, I really hope, or if your
religous I will pray, that you take a closer look at the issues at
hand and you can realize this that we are all in this problem
together. And please this Earth Day, do something a little extra for
Mother Earth, and if you are parents please inform your children about
these issues and have them participate, its a great way to enjoy a
healthy activity with your family. These thoughts and actions should
be carried out the remaining 364 days of the year, and Earth day
should be a celebration and a chance to re-energize our collective
effort to better the world.

Its that time of year again,...

Spring Jam, Hole and the Heart

Its that time of year again, where the finals are creeping around the
corner and students are starting to stress about projects, papers and
exams. The upcoming sign of the apocalypse of students life and nerves
is the posting of Spring Jam signs all over the U of M campus. Spring
Jam is the Universities attempt at relieving the stress of the
students for one weekend before the last push to finals begin.
Hopefully for student safety this doesn’t end in riots like in 2009.
This three part blog series from myself will explore the upcoming
musical acts of Spring Jam, which is arguably the biggest draw of the
weekend. The Head and the Heart are the opening day headliner, which
will be playing the Coffman front Plaza from 12pm-1pm on April 19th. I
took a listen to a few of their songs, and they will probably not be
the match that lights the riot. But during this groups brief run thus
far (they were formed in 2009), they have compiled a set of complex,
deep tracks that will be a nice way to relax and hopefully enjoy a
sunny day. I guarantee the end of their set will be their big hit,
which I am sure most people have heard through cities 97 or other
commercial enterprises, “Lost in My Mind.” The Head and the Heart will
be filling a similar role to Trampled by Turtles last year, except for
a much shorter set, and having a better location(NOT ST PAUL CAMPUS).
I will definitely be checking out this group during my break between
classes. Next blog will be about the second day headliner Jesse James,
and I will see if I can find out about the Battle of the Band
participants.

I came across this unique egg bake recipe on pinterest.com (one of the best ways to get the creative juices flowing!) and decided to try it out over the weekend with two of my best friends. It was delicious, super easy, and like nothing I have made for breakfast before!

Ingredients:
5 eggs
1 tube of crescent rolls
8 slices of bacon (we used turkey bacon)
shredded cheddar cheese
salt & pepper

Preheat oven according to crescent roll directions. Cook the bacon on the stove to desired crispiness and set aside. Crack the eggs and add a hefty pinch of salt and pepper in a bowl, whisk, and scramble on the stove. Most people don’t know to add salt and pepper to eggs before scrambling them as opposed to after they are already cooked! By doing it this way, the seasoning (in a way) becomes part of the eggs and enhances their flavor as opposed to eating eggs topped with salt and pepper. Remove eggs from heat when they are still slightly wet, as they will continue to cook in the oven.

In the mean time, arrange the crescent rolls on a pizza pan covered in foil (sprayed with cooking spray) in a circle with the corners of the dough overlapping at the center (picture below borrowed from original pinterest article to show how to lay crescents).

Lay one piece of bacon on each triangle of the crescent rolls. Sprinkle a decent amount of cheese around the inner circle of the crescent star wreath. Carefully spoon the scrambled eggs on top of the cheese, followed by another hefty amount of cheese on top of that. Then, bring the outer corners of the crescent triangles over the egg heap and gently press the dough down so it stays in place, repeat for the other crescent triangles until it forms a wreath. Bake in the oven (about 15 minutes or so) until the rolls are browned and the cheese is melted, cut into wedges and enjoy!

[May 2005] How Steve Martin transitioned from comedy to writing, and how celebrity affected his day-to-day life:

SM: You know, there’s a moment when you’re famous when it’s unbearable to go out because you’re too famous. And then there’s a moment when you’re famousjust right. [Laughs] And then there’s kind of a respect or distance or something, but you have a little bit more grease.

BLVR: When did the “just right” occur for you?

SM: I would say mid-eighties. There’s a kind of heat fever that just dissipates. You’re not someone who’s constantly being followed.
